Open Position:

We’re currently recruiting a postdoctoral scholar to explore the abiotic parameters that control habitability on the microscale. It’s a two-year position involving field work and the development of innovative microscopy techniques; more details on the project and application process can be found here.

Come work with us!

We seek creative, curious, self-motivated problem solvers with deep interests in environmental microbiology, astrobiology, geobiology, and/or culture-independent methods including fluorescence in situ hybridization and stable isotope probing. However, if you’ve got other ideas you’re passionate about that you think would work well in the Marlow Lab, please do get in touch. See the [Research] and [Publications] pages on this site to get a more specific idea of the Lab’s research priorities. PhD students would be admitted through the [Ecology, Behavior and Evolution] or the [Cell & Molecular Biology] graduate programs at Boston University, whose applications are due in December 2023. Before applying, please send us a note to discuss capacity in the lab, and to allow for sufficient time to complete the full application - see below for instructions and contact details.

Other prospective Postdoctoral Scholars are encouraged to secure external funding through opportunities including, but not limited to, the fellowships listed at the bottom of this page. If you’d like to work together in formulating a proposal, we would love to hear from you.

For all positions, we strongly encourage applicants from all backgrounds, as we are committed to the promotion of underrepresented groups in microbiology and STEM fields more broadly. The lab works proactively to create a safe and stimulating environment for all members to learn, discover, and lead.

If you’re interested in joining the Marlow lab, please send an email to jjmarlow@bu.edu with the following information:

  • A brief description (2-3 sentences) of your scientific interests.

  • Specific research question(s) you might like to pursue as a member of the lab, with some thoughts on how you might advance our efforts (~a paragraph).

  • Any research experience you have had. Please specifically indicate if you have experience with research cruises or field work, molecular biology bench work, bioinformatics, and/or confocal fluorescence microscopy.

  • Your current CV and an unofficial transcript as attachments.

Thank you very much for your interest, and we look forward to hearing from you! Regretfully, we may not be able to respond to all inquiries.
