The Marlow Lab is seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to advance the study of microbe-microbe and microbe-mineral interactions in complex communities through the U.S. Department of Energy’s efforts to pinpoint the “hot spots” and “hot moments” of metabolic activity. This research will advance recent progress in the lab on mapping complex microbial communities in their native habitats by incorporating highly multiplexed FISH methods and spatially-resolved metabolic modelling. In the process, this project will get ever closer to seeing how microbes truly operate in the real world, and how their largely inscrutable activity can be seen on the microscale and connected with biogeochemical fluxes.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in confocal microscopy and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Additional expertise in bioinformatics, metabolic modelling, microbial ecology, and/or salt marsh systems is necessary, as is an interest in extensive field work on Cape Cod. A robust publication record, an ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and a demonstrated commitment to expanding diversity, equity, and inclusion in the sciences are all highly desirable. Duties will include leading independent research projects, presenting relevant findings at conferences, publishing results in peer-reviewed journals, and working with other members of the Marlow Lab and collaborating groups.
Applicants should send the following materials to jjmarlow@bu.edu by February 20th, 2022 for full consideration. We strongly encourage applicants from all backgrounds, as we are committed to the promotion of underrepresented groups in microbiology and STEM fields more broadly.
A CV, including a list of peer-reviewed publications.
A two-page statement describing the ways in which your past research aligns with the topics and methods described above. Please also highlight your future research / career objectives and specific outreach and inclusion work you might like to pursue at BU.
The names and contact information for three references.
A PhD in a related field is required at the time of appointment, and the anticipated start date is April, 2022 (though this can be negotiated). Please get in touch with any questions, though we apologize in advance that we may not be able to respond to all inquiries.
We look forward to hearing from you!
